Rosh Hashana

Definition

Rosh Hashanah which literally means 'head of the year' is the first day of the Jewish New Year. It marks the celebration of creation of the world and the human being. Rosh Hashanah begins a ten day period of introspection and contemplation culminating in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah is marked with a special liturgy and rituals. Prior to the arrival of the day, it is customary to send new years greetings to friends and dear ones, to buy new clothing and to examine ones deeds. On Rosh Hashanah eve, one eats apples dipped in honey signifying a sweet year. At Rosh Hashanah services, the day is marked with a special liturgy in which we pray for the whole world. A highlight of the Rosh Hashanah service is the sounding of the Shofar, a ram's horn, which is meant to shock the listener into self-examination.

Services

Our moving, egalitarian services are a mixture of Hebrew and English. Men and women sit together. These services are marked by a unique spirituality featuring joyous/moving vocal and instrumental music. This music consists of everything from Carlebach to contemporary to traditional chant and much more. There is also exuberant dancing. The service features inspiring commentary designed to touch the worshipper with the deeper mood, meaning and message of the High Holydays.The services utilize the central prayers of the traditional liturgy. A stirring highlight of the Rosh Hashanah service is the Shofar service. The sounding of the Shofar is meant to awaken us to the fixing of the world (tikkun olam) and the fixing of the self(tikkun hanefesh). These services are geared for Jews who come from Reform, Conservative, and unaffiliated backgrounds.

This year Rosh Hashanah takes place on Tuesday, September 30 2008. Services begin at 10:45 AM and conclude at 1:45 PM (approximately). Don't miss our joyous conclusion! Doors open at 10:30 AM. Make sure you eat a hearty breakfast! Please read the entrance information prior to arriving.
